Charlie Weis pulled into Spygate, sort of

Posted on: May 16, 2008 10:28 am

Charlie Weis' name was pulled into the Spygate scandal for the first time in Thursday's New York Times.

Weis was among a small circle of people who knew about the taping of opponents' signals, former Patriots videographer Matt Walsh told the paper. Walsh said that other than Weis and Bill Belichick, the group included Walsh's supervisor Jimmy Dee, video department employee Fernando Neto, Ernie Adams (described as a "mysterious" assistant) and the Patriots' quarterbacks.

Walsh was the center of Spygate scandal that seemingly ended this week after his meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

"If someone questioned why Walsh was filming an opposing sideline," the Times stated, "he was told to say he was shooting the chains and the down-and-distance marker. If a team asked why the Patriots needed a third videographer, Walsh was instructed to say the coaches wanted two end-zone shots or tight footage."

Walsh asked a Patriots' quarterback (not identified) if the filming helped:

Walsh quoted the quarterback as saying: “Actually, probably about 75 percent of the time, Tampa Bay ran the defense we thought they were going to run. If not more.”

Drew Bledsoe and Tom Brady were among the four quarterbacks on the roster back in 2000.

"I know that we had a quarterback learning the signals and then relaying that information to Charlie (Weis)," Walsh told the Times, "and Charlie would then call it in to the quarterback on the field, through the coach-to-quarterback communication system in the helmet. As far as whether the quarterback on the field was actually told what defense was being run, or the coach, Charlie, just simply used that information in his play-calling that he called in, I’m not sure."

The Patriots are cheaters plain and simple. I'm not a Pats hater so I don't have reason to be biased. I was actually rooting for the Pats to win their 1st SB and any time they make it except last year! I hate the fact that they've cheated. People can argue that other teams cheat too but other teams haven't been caught and until they do, it doesn't matter. The Patriots are cheaters and the longer spygate goes on, the more we'll find out how much they cheated!!! Did Cheating win them the SB?? I don't know but if they cheated at any time during their SB season then the whole thing should be washed! If you had to cheat to get there then it shouldn't count!!!!! This is ridiculous!

Wow, a videographer was wired into the offensive playcalling on game days?

Surely Walsh isn't making this up ...

So by your awesome logic, here are just a few of the championships that should be wiped out.  The 1951 NY baseball Giants of Bobby Thomsen.  It is widely acknowledged that they stole a catcher's signals from a secret spot in centerfield and relayed them electronically to a middle man who relayed them to the batter.  The Giants even acknowledge this to a man, although Thomsen denies he was signaled on his pennant winning home run.  OK, by your logic, one of greatest moments in baseball history, doesn't count!!  They did "cheat" at some point, after all.

The famous Ice Bowl between the Packers and Cowboys.  On that famous quarterback sneak by Bart Starr, Packers guard Jerry Kramer now acknowledges that he moved before the snap in order to block the Cowboys defensive tackle.  He cheated!!  Another great moment now does not count!!

In 2005 in USC's great late season win over Notre Dame on their way to the National Championship, on the final touchdown of the game with five seconds to go and no timeouts, Matt Leinart appears to be stopped at the line of scrimmage on a QB sneak,  just short of the goal line.  Along comes Reggies Bush, pushing him from behind into the end zone.  This is illegal!!  He cheated!!  Take that national title away.  It doesn't count!!

This is not even to mention Mark "Holier than thou" Schlereth and his Broncos who cut blocked their way to multiple championships whiel also circumventing salary cap rules which allowed them to keep important players on their team, whom they would otherwise have lost.  Take those titles away!!  They don't count!!

Awesome, totally awesome logic
